Situated on the River Avon, 22 miles (35 km) south east of Birmingham and 8 miles (13 km) south west of Warwick, Stratford-upon-Avon is one of the most popular tourist destinations in England, owing to its status as birthplace of the playwright and poet William Shakespeare. For fans of the Bard, central Stratford’s most famous landmark is the Royal Shakespeare Theatre – home to the Royal Shakespeare Company – which is due to reopen in 2010 following extensive refurbishment (RSC performances are currently continuing at the Courtyard Theatre, just across the road.)
Other tourist attractions in or close to the town include five houses relating to Shakespeare's life: Hall's Croft (the one-time home of Shakespeare's daughter) New Place (owned by Shakespeare himself), Anne Hathaway's Cottage (the home of Shakespeare's wife's family prior to her marriage) and Mary Arden's House (the family home of his mother).
